RMV Evaluations for Buzzards Bay Drivers

After an OUI or DUI, an Immediate Threat determination or an interlock violation, most drivers need an RMV-required clinical evaluation before reinstatement is considered. We complete these evaluations for adults in Buzzards Bay. Buzzards Bay drivers include residents of Buzzards Bay village, Monument Beach, Pocasset, Gray Gables, Cataumet and Sagamore.

Buzzards Bay clients can meet with us by secure video from home, which means no drive to Medway. If you would rather meet face to face, our office is at 165 Main Street, Suite 111A, Medway, MA 02053.

Buzzards Bay Village, Bourne and the Canal

Buzzards Bay sits at the head of the bay of the same name, at the Cape Cod Canal's western end. The Bourne Bridge and the Sagamore Bridge carry traffic over the canal, and those crossings are what make a trip to Medway a real commitment for Upper Cape residents. That is why we built our RMV evaluations around secure video: you can complete the evaluation from home in Buzzards Bay, Pocasset or Cataumet without planning around bridge traffic.

If your RMV notice or a letter from your attorney lists a Bourne address, the Town of Bourne and Buzzards Bay are the same jurisdiction for court purposes. Use whichever name appears on your paperwork when you complete our intake form.

Local Courts and RMV Offices for Buzzards Bay Drivers

OUI cases arising in Buzzards Bay are heard at Falmouth District Court, 161 Jones Road, Falmouth, MA, which serves Bourne, Falmouth and Mashpee. Buzzards Bay is a village of the Town of Bourne, so its drivers are under Bourne's court and RMV jurisdiction. The closest RMV Service Center on the Cape is in South Yarmouth, and there is also a Plymouth RMV Service Center across the canal. Hearings for suspensions are held by phone, so you do not need to travel to an RMV office for them.

The RMV is separate from the courts. Even after your Buzzards Bay court case is resolved, the RMV may have its own requirements, including this evaluation, before your license is reinstated.

Which RMV Evaluation Do You Need?

Your RMV letter or hearing notice lists your requirements. We offer both evaluations the RMV typically asks for, separately or together:

  • Substance Abuse Evaluation with Risk of Recidivism: the most common requirement after an OUI, DUI or Immediate Threat suspension.

  • RMV Psychiatric Evaluation (Form MAB118): required when the RMV has concerns about mental health or medications.

  • Both, combined: one appointment at the combined rate.

What Is a Risk of Recidivism Assessment?

A risk of recidivism assessment is the clinician's written opinion on how likely you are to have another alcohol- or drug-related driving offense. It is attached to your substance abuse evaluation, which is why many people call it a "letter of recidivism." It draws on your substance use history, any prior offenses, the treatment and recovery steps you've taken, and your mental health history.

The RMV does not waive this requirement. Until it is completed, your suspension can remain in place indefinitely, so it's worth getting it done early.

How the Process Works

  1. Complete the quick form. Include your hearing date and your attorney's name if you have one.

  2. Meet with your clinician. A one-hour interview by secure video, or in person at our Medway office.

  3. We complete your report. Your substance abuse evaluation and risk of recidivism assessment.

  4. You receive your written report, which you can provide to the RMV so you can move forward with your hearing.

Turnaround: in as little as 48 hours when your hearing is close. Tell us your date and we'll prioritize accordingly.

What the Evaluation Assesses

  • Alcohol and drug use history, including current use or abstinence

  • Prior offenses and driving history

  • Past and current treatment, support groups and recovery steps

  • Mental health and medical history relevant to driving safety

  • A risk of recidivism opinion, with recommendations when clinically appropriate

Impaired Driving Data for Buzzards Bay

Between 2021 and 2025, MassDOT recorded 3,311 crashes in Bourne. Of these, 117 involved suspected alcohol, 32 involved suspected drug use, and 7 were fatal. Buzzards Bay is a village within Bourne, and MassDOT reports crashes by town, so these are the Bourne figures.

Source: MassDOT IMPACT Crash Data Portal, accessed October 2026. "Suspected" flags reflect what was recorded at the scene and likely undercount impaired driving, and a crash count is not a count of people or OUI charges.
