RMV Psychiatric Evaluations for Amherst Drivers
If RMV Medical Affairs has asked you to complete a Psychiatric Evaluation (Form MAB118), Greater Boston Psychiatric Services can complete it for adults in Amherst. Villages and neighborhoods we serve include North Amherst and South Amherst.
Amherst clients can meet with us by secure video from home, which means no drive to Medway. If you would rather meet face to face, our office is at 165 Main Street, Suite 111A, Medway, MA 02053.
Getting Your Evaluation Done from Amherst
Amherst is home to UMass Amherst, Amherst College and Hampshire College, with the Emily Dickinson Museum along Route 9. Because a video appointment needs only a device and a connection, residents of Amherst can skip the drive and the parking and meet from home or work. If you received a Form MAB118 request from RMV Medical Affairs, the deadline on the notice is what we work against.
Local Courts and RMV Offices for Amherst Drivers
Form MAB118 is handled by RMV Medical Affairs, which reviews completed forms centrally rather than through a local office. The nearest RMV Service Centers listed by the RMV include Easthampton, Greenfield and Springfield.
A Medical Affairs request is separate from any court case. You can be asked for this evaluation even if you have never been charged with anything.
What Is the RMV Psychiatric Evaluation (Form MAB118)?
RMV Medical Affairs requests a Psychiatric Evaluation (Form MAB118) when it has received a report, from a physician, family member or law enforcement official, suggesting that a driver may have a psychiatric or medical condition affecting their ability to drive safely. It is a different requirement from the substance abuse evaluation with risk of recidivism: it is not tied to an OUI or DUI case.
Massachusetts requires the form to be completed by a physician licensed in the state or a psychiatric nurse practitioner, which are the credential types on our clinical team.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the RMV substance abuse evaluation?

Who is allowed to complete Form MAB118?
Massachusetts requires the form to be completed by a physician licensed in Massachusetts or a psychiatric nurse practitioner, both credential types on our clinical team.
Do I have to travel from Amherst for this evaluation?

Is a video evaluation accepted?
Yes. The clinical content and the completed form are the same whether you attend by video or in person at our Medway office.
How soon can I get an appointment?
In as little as 48 hours when your deadline is close. Expedited scheduling is available for an additional $225.
Impaired Driving Data for Amherst
Looking at 2021 through 2025, MassDOT logged 1,715 crashes in Amherst, of which 82 were marked suspected alcohol, 11 suspected drug use and 3 fatal.
Figures are from the MassDOT IMPACT Crash Data Portal, accessed October 2026. Treat the suspected alcohol and drug counts as a floor, since they depend on scene reports, and remember that a crash is not an OUI charge.
