FAQ

About Our Practice

What is Greater Boston Psychiatric Services?

Greater Boston Psychiatric Services (GBPS) is a Massachusetts telehealth practice founded in 2016 by Caryn Metzger, MSN, PMHCNS-BC. Our board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists provide psychiatric evaluations, ongoing medication management, and RMV-required substance abuse evaluations to adults across the state.

Our Services

What conditions do you treat?

We treat depression, anxiety and panic disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, sleep disturbance, and mood or emotional regulation concerns, along with specialized medication management for schizophrenia.

Our Services

What's the difference between a psychiatric evaluation and medication management?

A psychiatric evaluation is typically your first appointment — a comprehensive conversation about your history, symptoms, and goals that results in an initial treatment plan. Medication management refers to the ongoing 30-minute follow-up visits used to monitor how a medication regimen is working and adjust it as needed.

Our Services

Do you provide therapy or counseling?

No. Our practice focuses on pharmacological (medication) treatment. While we talk through concerns and provide support, we do not replace regular sessions with a licensed therapist — for many conditions, the strongest outcomes come from combining medication with psychotherapy.

Eligibility

What ages do you treat?

We provide psychopharmacological treatment for adults age 18 and older. We do not currently treat children or adolescents.

Eligibility

Do you see patients outside of Massachusetts?

No. Our clinicians are licensed in Massachusetts and can only provide care to patients who are physically located in Massachusetts at the time of their appointment.

Insurance & Payment

Which insurance plans do you accept?

We're in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, Optum, Tufts Health Plan, Wellpoint, United Healthcare, HPI, Mass General Brigham, Carelon, UMR, and UniCare. Self-pay options are also available. We are unable to bill Medicare, Medicaid, or supplemental plans.

RMV Evaluations

What is an RMV substance abuse evaluation, and do I need one?

The Massachusetts RMV requires this evaluation, which includes a risk of recidivism assessment, in connection with certain OUI/DUI cases or after an Immediate Threat determination. If the RMV has notified you that this evaluation is required, we can complete it by telehealth and report the findings directly to the RMV.

Telehealth & Logistics

Do I need to visit an office in person?

No. All appointments — evaluations, medication management, and RMV evaluations — are conducted entirely by secure video. You'll need a private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera. There is no waiting room and no commute.

Telehealth & Logistics

Can lab work be done without visiting your office?

Yes. For medications that require blood-level or other lab monitoring, we're connected electronically to local labs near you, so you can have labs drawn nearby and the results are routed directly to our office.

Getting Started

How soon can I get an appointment?

Availability varies by service and by clinician, but because every visit is virtual, we're often able to schedule new patients faster than a practice that requires an in-person visit. Contact us directly for current openings.
